Turin’s buses, trams and metro (Line 1) are run by GTT, and one ticket system covers all of them.
Students under 26: travel free with Piemove
Piemove is the Regione Piemonte scheme that gives university students free public transport for a year. In Turin it covers the GTT urban network (bus, tram, metro), the GTT suburban network and trains between Turin stations, including the links to Grugliasco and Venaria. It also works on urban transport in Alessandria, Asti, Biella, Cuneo, Novara, Verbania and Vercelli.
Who can get it:
- Under 26 when you apply
- Enrolled at UniTo, the Politecnico or the Università del Piemonte Orientale (or one of the other listed institutions) in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD
- ISEE up to €85,000. Students with a certified disability above 66% don’t need an ISEE.
- You don’t need to live in Piedmont if you study at one of the three universities.
How it works:
- Apply on the BIP Piemonte portal (bip.piemonte.it). You don’t have to upload any documents, because the system checks your enrolment with your university.
- The pass goes on a BIP card (order one online, shipped in about a month) or on your Politecnico student card.
- While you wait for the card, your application receipt works on buses and trams. The metro needs the physical card.
- It’s valid for 12 months, including summer. Your age and enrolment are checked automatically every six months.
- To renew it, you need at least 60 validated journeys a year, so tap your card every time you board.
It’s an experimental scheme for academic years 2025/26, 2026/27 and 2027/28.
Tap&Go: pay with your bank card
If you don’t have a pass, tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard or American Express card, or your phone or watch wallet, on the reader. You don’t need a separate ticket.
- It works at all metro stations and on board selected bus lines (including 6, 8, 11, 12, 19, 33, 35, 55, 56, 58, 61, 64, 68, 71 and others). GTT lists all of them.
- It costs €1.70 for a “City 100” ticket: 100 minutes on the urban network, changes included.
- With a Maestro debit card, the system holds €7 temporarily but only charges the ticket price.
- If an inspector checks you, show the same card you tapped.
Ordinary passes (urban network, “Formula U”)
| Pass | Price |
|---|---|
| Weekly | €12 |
| Monthly | €38 |
| Annual | €310 |
These are GTT’s standard Formula U prices for Turin’s urban network. There’s also a paid Under 26 annual pass priced by ISEE band, but most university students are better off with free Piemove. Check gtt.to.it for current prices before you buy.
Paper tickets and validation
- Paper tickets and smartcards are sold at tabacchi, newsstands and metro machines.
- Validate every time, on board or at the metro gates. If you travel without a validated ticket, you can be fined.
