If you’re a non-EU student staying in Italy for more than 90 days, you need a permesso di soggiorno per studio. You have to apply within 8 working days of arriving in Italy.

Step 1: Get free help and the kit

  • PoliTo students: book a free session with the Immigration Desk (Cittadella Politecnica, Corso Castelfidardo 39) through the booking tool on the Portale della Didattica. They help you fill in the forms and get the kit.
  • Everyone: any Patronato office helps for free.
  • The application kit (the envelope with a yellow band) is available at post offices.

Step 2: Prepare your documents

For a first student permit, the Politecnico lists:

  1. Two photocopies of your passport’s personal-data page, plus two of your visa and entry stamp
  2. A photocopy of your codice fiscale, if you have one
  3. Your university admission letter
  4. Your enrolment certificate
  5. A €16 marca da bollo (revenue stamp), bought at a tabacchi
  6. Proof of financial means (for example a scholarship letter)
  7. A photocopy of your health insurance

All photocopies must be A4.

Step 3: Hand it in at a Sportello Amico post office

FeeAmount
Marca da bollo€16
Postal costs€30.00
Electronic permit (payment slip given by the Immigration Desk or Patronato)€70.46

These are the amounts for a student permit, as published by the Politecnico di Torino. Check with your university’s desk or a Patronato if your situation is different.

You’ll get a receipt with a user ID and password. Keep it with your passport until your permit is issued. It proves that you’ve applied.

Step 4: Fingerprints at the Questura

You’ll receive an appointment with the Questura’s Ufficio Immigrazione (via Val della Torre 3 in Turin, its new site from September 2026, according to the Politecnico). Bring 4 identical passport photos and your original documents. You must go: missing it suspends your application.

Step 5: Track and collect

Track your application on portaleimmigrazione.it with the codes on your receipt. After the fingerprints, it can take several weeks before you’re called to collect the permit.

Renewal

You can renew from 90 days before it expires, so don’t wait until the last day. For renewals, the Politecnico also asks for proof of exams passed: at least one exam for the first renewal, and two per year after that.
